If you are part of the 51% siding with the FBI over Apple (according to a recent Pew poll) then SHAME ON YOU. Extra shame if you are in a position of power (like a teacher) and are spewing these lies.
It is not a “slippery slope” to say that forcing Apple to write code to add to iOS that bypasses security cannot be exploited by parties other than the FBI. It is a FACT of math/computers/technology. It is also not a slippery slope to say that the legal precedent set by such a ruling may result in law enforcement asking the same of Google, Microsoft, and other tech companies in the future. That’s what legal precedents are for.
It is also a fact that if this code were written into the OS by Apple, it could be exploited on any iPhone running that operating system. It is not possible to write code that can only be used on that one machine – that’s not how hardware or software works. It simply fucking is not.
All of these are facts. But on an emotional level, it is disgusting for me to think of our government compelling private companies to manufacture ways of spying on its citizens. If you really want to take away privacy in the (sometimes legitimate but often fake) name of security, then do your own fucking dirty work, FBI. Hire your own tech experts and come up with your own hacks into personal spaces. I’m positive that is already the job of some NSA employees. Don’t try to compel private companies to do it for you.
I’ve read numerous articles about this issue and I’ll try to remember to link them in the comments for further reading so you don’t just take my word for it. If you are going to have an opinion on this, PLEASE make it an informed opinion. I am absolutely not an Apple supporter. Anyone who knows me well knows I have my reasons for never wanting to own an Apple product. So don’t mistake this rant as “There goes Angela. What a homer for Apple! She’ll take any propoganda that company spoon feeds her!” I am basing my stance on facts that have to do with math and computer science in general, not any specific implementation of it.
The FBI has turned this case into a public affair in the hopes of winning the PR battle. They are counting on a misinformed public. Don’t be part of that misinformed public.
